Cornell notes    China tackles antimicrobial resistance, Kathleen McLaughlin, August 31 2016

Human and animal antibiotics
Antimicrobials

1 million premature deaths

Human behavior

Rapid diagnostics

Catastrophic results

China is the biggest consumer of human and animal antibiotics. China is doing reasearch to develop new antimicrobials.

Because of the antimicriobial resistance in China, there are 1 million premature deaths.

The resistance is caused by the human behavior. People use inappropriate antimicrobials.

Doctors don’t have access to rapid diagnostics, so they use antibiotics even when it is not necessary.

The overuse of the drugs can create catastrophic results.
